I thought that is for the search filter using the search bar, not for the first time geolocation load. I would like for users to be able to click on the category links and be served up locations near them and not All locations. I set the search radius to 40 miles. Austin is not within those search parameters, shouldn’t it locate me to the city within that range?

    Guust-

Thank you. My browser is allowing to be located to my site. I’ve already allowed location, and it is stored in the advanced content settings in Chrome.

I live closer to San Antonio, but my IP address on my laptop is closer to Austin. I would think the site would load to Austin and the location switcher would display “Austin” and not change location. On my Android phone, I have location set to the highest possible accuracy, using gps, wi-fi and networks, so on my mobile device, it should geolocate me to San Antonio.

Alex helped me with the Multi-location and Advanced Search settings, and yesterday the site was locating as expected, but the search filter was not. He made some changes and now search is working, but the site is locating me back to location/me again.

“Alex gets redirected to Austin, because he is closer to Austin than San Antonio.
You get redirected to the location/me page because you are within the set radius of where there are listings on your site.”

I am much closer to San Antonio than Austin…my phone should take me to San Antonio. My laptop’s IP address is closer to Austin, so it should geolocate me to Austin listings…can you please explain why I am now getting location/me again?

I understand that if I perform a search to a radius, it will show listings from any city in that radius, which is perfect….but on first load, I want it to load to the correct city, so that if the user clicks on the Category menu links, it will load the results for a city and not “All”.

Also, I just tested it on my android LGV10 (location is enabled to high accuracy) and it is not geolocating me at all. When the site loads, it displays all places with no location set.

Not for me. I’ve tested it on a desktop and laptop computer, and for me, whether I am in incognito mode or not, I’m getting the location/me.

I just tested in FireFox and IE as well, and I’m getting location/me after it asks to allow location. Do you have any idea why you would get one result and I’m getting something different?

Thank you Alex. Now in a regular browser and in an incognito browser window, it is aksing to allow location, then it is serving up: https://www.letsgocoupons.com/location/me, and the location switcher stays at “Change Location”.

The search function looks like it is working now though. If we can figure out how to have both work that would be awesome! 🙂

    Hi Alex-

Thank you, yes, now it is geolocating me to Austin on my laptop, but if I use the search bar and search for restaurants within a 200 mile radius of me it returns no results. It should show restaurants in Austin and San Antonio. Search will work if I put a city name or zip code, but not if I use the “near me” and miles search option. Does turning off geolocation affect this, and is there a way to either turn off the “near me” option in the search bar, or fix it so that it will return listings based on the users detected location?

    Thank you,
    Laura

Thank you Alex. I’m attaching a screenshot of the incognito browser. I only had the one incognito browser window open. It asks for geolocation, it asks to allow for location, then it loads to location/me.

I’m attatching the screenshot of the result immediately after first page load.

Thank you Alex. That is what it is set to. I’m trying not to pull my hair out…LOL! Okay, I’ve changed to Modern Theme. I have GD Home as my home page in WordPress Read Settings. I have GD Home page set to GD Home page in Permalinks (in GeoDirectory). I have redirect user to closest location set, as you specified above. This is what is happening, even in Incongito mode.

On first load, it asks if I want to be geolocated, I answer yes, asks for allow location, I answer yes.
The page loads, the location switcher does not change, it stays at “Change Location”. The url is not updated to the city. The navigation category link urls do not update. The url it serves me is: letsgocoupons.com/location/me. The same thing that was happening with GeoTravel.

I tested your demo modern theme, and upon geolocation and first page load, it takes me to the city, and the location switcher changes to the city name. The url includes the city name. If I hover over the logo, the city is included in the url. This is not happening with my site.

Can you please help me discover what I need to modify to make it function like your demo? I’m almost ready to completely perform a fresh install, but I don’t want to lose all the work I did to get the listings displaying how I want.

I just tried it with my current theme. I modified the settings and it does stop loading the home page, goes to the location page, but still no location switcher displays the city name and the url it directs me to is still https://www.letsgocoupons.com/location/me/, not the city page, so I’m not sure what the issue is. I’m going to switch to the GD Modern theme and hopefully it will work as expected.

Thank you for all of your help with this.

Okay, so I’ve been looking at all the different themes. It seems like the travel theme (design wise) was based on the modern theme. I tested both demo sites and the travel demo site is doing the same thing as my site. I tested the modern theme, and after geolocating, if I click on the logo (to return to the home page) the logo url shows the city and will stay in location when loading back to the home page. This is exactly what I want to acheive. Did you do something different with the link url to the logo to make sure it redirects back to the users last location vs (home page url)?

If you can help me acheive this same functionality with the travel theme that would be great, but if not, I’m going to switch to the Modern theme and if you can let me know if the theme automatically detects user’s last location when clicking on the theme logo, or if there are other settings to acheive this, I would greatly appreciate it. I’d like to know that before I dive in, switch themes and get stuck again.

    Thank you so very much!!!

In reply to your latest post, it was geolocating me to Houson, so the 61 mile radius would show no results. When I increased the search radius, it did return results.

Today, I am working from a different location, with a different internet provider. I tested in a regular chrome broswer window and in incognito mode. Here is the url it returned me to: https://www.letsgocoupons.com/location/me/ It shows San Antonio search results, but San Antonio is not displayed in the location switcher, it still says “Change Location” and urls are not city specific.

In the regular browser, it asks to be geolocated, but not allow location, as expected, but here are the results: https://www.letsgocoupons.com/location/me/ Here is the url it returned me to: https://www.letsgocoupons.com/location/me/ It shows San Antonio search results, but San Antonio is not displayed in the location switcher, it still says “Change Location” and urls are not city specific.

In an incognito mode, it asked to be geolocated and asked to allow location and it returned the same url as above also with no city set in location switcher and no city in the url.

I have not modified any of the backend settings. Can you please help me figure out why I am getting such inconsistent results. Yesterday, it was geolocating and displaying the city location in the location switcher and in the place urls and today it is not.

I have held off of design development until I can at least get the GD functioning properly. Thank you for helping sort this out.

Isn’t that why the browser asks to know location? So that it picks up the actual location vs. the ISP location? Can this be corrected?

Also, if the browser is locating me to Austin, why would the search for restaurants return no results? I increased the search radius to 176 miles, so it should return results from Austin and San Antonio.

I tested on my mobile and it is geolocating correctly. This is happening from my laptop. I am using my phone’s mobile hotspot to connect my laptop to the internet.

Here is the url from the search I did from my regular chrome browser window:

    https://www.letsgocoupons.com/?geodir_search=1&stype=gd_place&s=Restaurants&snear=Near%3A+Me&sgeo_lat=29.760426700000004&sgeo_lon=-95.3698028

Here is the url from the search I used from incognito mode:

    https://www.letsgocoupons.com/?geodir_search=1&stype=gd_place&s=Restaurants&snear=Near%3A+User+defined&sgeo_lat=37.09024&sgeo_lon=-95.712891

Both return no results. The first url has settings set to search within a 61 mile radius of me.
In incoginto mode, it only gave me the option for user defined, I was not able to see the option to check “near me” and increase the mile radius. In geodirectory settings it is set to 40 miles. I live within 40 miles and it should have returned results. Also notice that the lat and lon are different. I used the search from the same location. After it geolocated me to “Austin” and I live near San Antonio, I returned to the home page and did a search for “near me”. These are the two different results I got, both with no locations found.

Thank you. The issue still exists that it is not geolocating me to the city that is nearest to me. It is geolocating me to Austin, not San Antonio.

Also the issue of returning no results if a search is performed from the home page.

Can you help resolve these issues? I can do without the home page, but the geolocation has to function properly for every user.

    Thank you,
    Laura
