thanks for your reply.
I used the wrong wording (delivered) to describe the issue and should have written: „…does not send the invoice automatically.“
So the snippet prevents the sending via E-Mail, but the 0 amount invoice is still generated and stored in the client’s inbox.
I was hoping for „is neither generated and stored nor sent“ for free packages.
Thanks for your explanation of subscription management. Is there still hope for a „no invoice“-solution?

the snippet works perfectly fine and does not deliver the invoice automatically. But the client stills finds an invoice (zero value) in his inbox (BuddyPress installed).
In my opinion an even better solution would be to let the admin decide whether an invoice is generated or not for free packages.
I requested this feature for my free events package and heard this is in the works. I guess this would include not only the Event CPT package but Places CPT package too?

Yes, way too fast, but I would not expect a redirect in the first place. Now I kind of leaves the impression that I (as the system owner) want to hide something.
Thank you Alex, I installed the email log plugin and all of a sudden everything went back to normal, even after removing the plugin. Not sure what caused the issue, but I will let you know if this was not a temporary one.
I guess we can mark this topic as resolved for now.
Update: an invoice is generated, but my system does not send it automatically as it did before.
