@websitu – i suppose it depends where you are, but it’s been lovely here. A bit crap today though, so it looks like British summer is now over!
Shame about the wait – now i’ll just have to chill out with a few beers in the sunshine instead of working…oh well, never mind 😉
Hi Sally,
With custom post types addon you can also have different fields for each type. (Your accomodation listings can have input boxes for “number of rooms”, “air con” etc which you obviously won’t want on your services listings)
You can’t have a drop down box of locations until you get the multilocation addon…
Best to get the full suite of addons for 4 months. You can use them forever, but you would need to renew your subscription to keep access to updates & support – that gives you 4 months to get your site built and get some money coming in to pay for the next round of support 🙂
So the problem with the multilocations is just the location switcher not being able to remember the location a visitor chooses – yes?
The locations are only custom post types, so there is no problem with having multilocations – just that i can’t browse the whole site through a location set in the switcher. Am i understanding thie correctly?
Thanks
Ok, just been back for another chat with them – this was how it went…

I have a plugin which relies on php sessions to work – the plugin dev said you didn’t support them, but a sales guy just said you did…?James Gardner
Well, it’s a bit of a touchy subject. They’re not explicitly disallowed on our service, since they do work. Caching can cause them to break which is why we typically disable cache on the relevant page, or ask that you store the session data in a cookie.I guess going with that, what does the plugin do?
John Allsopp
It’s a directory – https://wpgeodirectory.com It uses php sessions to store location data, so visitors can browse directory entries relevant to their areaJames Gardner
Hmm, is that used on the homepage?John Allsopp
A visitor can set a location and then when browsing the site through different categories etc, they only see listings in the area they choseSo, site-wide
There’s a demo at http://wpgeo.directory/ The location switcher is on the right hand side in the main navigation bar…
James Gardner
Do you have it on a site currently? Or are you thinking about implementing it in your site?John Allsopp
It’s on there at the moment but the site’s still in developmentJames Gardner
Alright, it may not work looking at how it functions. Since it’s using Geolocation you could maybe implement that functionality through Javascript, and have it communicate with the rest of the directory system.John Allsopp
So if it doesn’t work…is there anything you could do (from a server perspective) to allow it to function?James Gardner
Well we can exclude cache on any sub-page, but if it causes the home page to not work we cannot do anything about it.…in the sense that if a visitor chose “london” as their location, they would still see listings from everywhere?
@paolo – you’re worrying me now!
I just asked wpengine if they supported php sessions and they said “YEs we do but we recommend using Javascript to store your sessions”
If it turns out that they don’t – what problems will i face?
btw. I also asked mediatemple the same question. They said their DV (vps) hosting supports php sessions, but their wordpress hosting doesn’t.
You’ll need the multilocations addon for more than one location.
To be a feasible option IMHO you will need the multilocations, custom post types and payment addons – so you’re best to get the full whack…and now they’ve added the 4 month option it’s not quite so painful.I think the support here is great – i found WPMU to be woeful, especially when you consider the cost…and every plugin i’ve tried to use has either had issues or has omissions that make it very limiting.
Once you can afford it, i think getting the addons for WPGeo will be a sound investment 🙂
I tried working with WPMU’s directory plugin once, and found it to be awful.
Couldn’t you achieve separation by setting up different custom post types in GeoDirectory for services and accomodation?
I host almost all my sites with WPEngine – it’s expensive but is fast, secure, has automated daily backups and a staging area.
You’ll need a registrar that provides DNS (most do) and a separate email solution (Google Apps / Zoho etc).I’ve heard people say that MediaTemple is good, but i’ve never tried it…
Nice work – can’t wait to get started… 🙂
Ok thanks, glad that this is being addressed 🙂
Ok thanks – so just to be clear, let’s say i add 3 post types:
churches | museums | newsIn terms of linking things together:
events <2 way> churches – possible
events <2 way> museums – possible
news <2 way> museums – not possibleIs this correct?
@tammy Tammy – The new version is an attempt to allow the best possible compatibility with any theme you choose to use GD with.
Using GD with your Avada child theme, or Genesis child theme or whatever else you choose to use, should be much easier.
The idea is that it works “out of the box” in most cases, and in cases where things aren’t quite right, it will be easy to make adjustments.I’ve always veen very wary of using any theme from Themeforest as their authors always seem to bundle many things into the themes that shouldn’t be there – custom post types, shortcodes etc. This means you’re effectively locked into using that theme for life, as changing themes would mean losing large parts of your website. Not sure if Avada is guilty of this, as i’ve never used it, but it’s worth thinking about.
