When I use the autocomplete the search function starts automatically. If I don’t put in the location first, it doesn’t give me the appropriate results. Can I make it so it will only search when they hit the search button even if they use the autocomplete on the search item field?

Weird! It is only supposed to submit the search if they click the search icon button (unless they click a search for autocomplete suggestion).

Please share a link so we can check on that, and WP Admin in case we need to check the settings.

I see, no, there isn’t an option to change the way the suggestions work at this time.

The way it works is to send the user to a specific page like the specific post or category.

Instead of simply disabling the autocomplete in the advanced search options, have you tried adding a category select dropdown to the search bar? Would that work for you?

I’ll give that a shot and see how it goes. Thanks!

I have one CPT “lawyers” that people are searching for. Most people will search for a specific area of practice near their location. Because the autocomplete submitted the search automatically, I’ve put in a category selection drop-down box. If I am using that, I would like to disable the general search field and just keep the location option. How do I do that?

Another question, I know some people will still come searching for individual lawyers, probably the lawyers themselves, and will need a general search box. Is there a way to have a field that would switch between searching by category (showing the category and location fields) or searching by custom/laywer (showing just the general search field with possible autocomplete) with just one CPT? Any help is appreciated.

Those options are not built in, but can be accomplished with custom code.

You can find some optional custom css here to hide various parts of the search bar to get you started:
