So for the project I’m developing, I added a link to the Directory at the top menu. Then, I added links to each of the Place Categories underneath. I plan to do the same with events.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of categories for this project, and looks unmanageable when viewed as the default accordian list.

I looked at menu plugins that have two or three-columned submenus, but I’ve been having problems getting them to work with GD’s “change location” menu addon, which is something I definitely want to keep.

Are there any menu plugins that are compatible with GD? Or is there a way I can use custom CSS to create a columned submenu in a way that works with GD and its Framework theme?

Cannot really help with that. Did you consider the CPT Categories widget? That will link all categories and child categories.
