OK i found the problem in this plugin

That is wrong in so many ways as they seem to acknowledge:

A very hacky fallback for mb_convert_case

Your best solution is just to have your host add the multibyte support, just link them to this and they will know what you mean: http://php.net/manual/en/mbstring.installation.php

Thank you so much for your endeavours – will do

However, there is now a dead link now on all “upload and import” buttons for geo – “download ok”

Did you disable something ?

Oh, Guust helped me understand what you mean.
I had replaced a file with a newer file during testing, i put the old one back and it now seems to work.
