We’ve set up a Wood Manufacturing supply chain database with two Custom Post(CPT) types specific to our industry; Primary MFG & Secondary MFG. The problem we have run into is there are purchasing and business managers want to see both CPT’s on a map.

This is a major limitation of GD-Map – you can only show one CPT on a map at a time. Unless, like we have done, combine both CPT’s into one CPT – thus being able to show all companies on a map. We had to create a CPT called All Companies.

In our business Primary and Secondary manufacturing are our two main Custom Post types. In GD’s documentation these CPT’s are considered CPT Selectors. Both CPT’s have several “Category Selectors” to provide additional search criteria. For example: Secondary CPT has; Millwork, Furniture, and Pallet MFg as categories you can search for.

    GD reference links:
    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/gd-search/
    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs-v2/addons/custom-post-types/
    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/places-categories-and-listings/

The only way we can get around this is if we create a CPT called All Companies and combine both CPT’s – but the problem with this is we now have to manage two sets of records…

I was hoping someone from GD can review how we have set up our CPT’s and the backend and see if there is a better way to do what we have done…

Why do you not create one CPT with two main categories?

    Thanks

I have done that, but we also want to have the two main categories separated. We also have a couple of ancillary CPT’s set up. We have set up the following CPT’s:

    1. All Companies ( Combines 4 CPT’s into one: 2,3,4, and 5)
    2. Primary MFG
    3. Secondary MFG
    4. Distributor
    5. Service Providers
    6. Events

We want to have categories 2,3,4, and 5 as their own CPT’s. The only reason we combined all the CPt’s into one is to be able to see all the companies on a map at the same time. A purchasing would want to see all the different types of companies on a map at the same time. It helps when developing value stream mapping.

I can send you a login to get into the backend.

I still don’t understand why you want them as separate CPTs. What is it that prevents you from having them in the same CPT but as categories?
You can always use sub-categories or custom fields to allow visitors to refine a search.
