Hi guys, we run GeoDir + Multiple Locations module on 2 sites for our clients. On BOTH sites the same happened, please see the notes below.

    1. Out of blue the upgrade appeared in our dashboard and was installed. (Why was it forced? We don’t have automatic plugins updates enabled.)

    2. On one site a combination of Version 1.6.38 and WordPress 5.2 brought the Directory down, nothing worked. We run NewsPaper theme 0 which s one of top-10 Themeforest themes.
    Any known issues with it?

    3. I tried upgrading to the latest version on one site and it completely broke down the layout of the directory. I had to roll everything back to Version 1.6.38.

    Any comments/known issues regarding 1, 2 and 3?

P.S. We need to take a deep breath before upgrading and I will be testing the upgrade first on a separate copy of the website.

    Hi Elijah Lokvkoff,

Thanks for your post. Please allow me to answer your questions accordingly.

    1. Updating GD plugins would still require a manual click on the update link https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs-v2/addons/installing-addons/#updates .

    2. There isn’t a known issue yet with GDv1 and WP5.2. We need a WP admin access to investigate this further.

    3. Please try cloning the site to a staging URL and perform the update following the instructions here https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs-v2/geodirectory/upgrade-from-gdv1/ . Then, if you encounter any issues, just drop us a message here.

    Thanks!

Guys, it is a mess, not sure why it is happening.
Again, I logged in to the site, the upgrade was forced on us, I didn’t do anything.

The directory got upgraded automatically, see the screenshot:

In this state directory simply not working – the blank page is displayed instead of the directory page.

It is a second time I have to roll back the site manually to the old version.
Please let me know what’s going on.

    Hi Elijah Lokvkoff,

Thanks for your reply. If you wish to remain in GDv1, you can ignore that message. If it doesn’t work, share your Website WP admin access here in private reply and we’ll check on it.

Kor, I think the point is missed here:

    1. Take a look at the screenshot that was mentioned in the original post

    a. GeoDirectory does get upgraded, this is not just an informaional message
    b. The upgrade is forced on us, we didn’t do anythinng to upgrade it.

    Hello,

Geodirectory does not and cannot automatically install itself.
Some members are hosted with companies that have software that is set to push updates. Siteorigin has settings for that. If you need help to disable them contact your host.

If you need to, you can use a plugin like Easy Updates Manager to make sure the plugin is not upgraded (at least by WP internal updates).

If the downgrade page is still visible, make use of it. If you have already converted, then you can restore a backup.

Guys, to address the comment in Alex’s reply – I thought about it if course and we do not have any mechanism for automatically updating plugins.
    a. I checked softalicious settings – no automatic updates enabled there.
    b. Other plugins DO not get automatic updates.

Pretty strange, I know, but unfortunately – a fact of life – happened twice already. (We use SiteGroud, pretty decent WordPress hosting)

Our best practices are in the video and instructions here: https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs-v2/geodirectory/upgrade-from-gdv1/

We are always here to help if you run into theme conflicts during your update.

Siteground definitely has an option for automatic updates. You can read more about it here: https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/wordpress/auto-updates/

If you run into specific issues, please make a new topic and we will help you with them.

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Hi Elijah Lokvkoff,

Thanks for your reply. Please share your Website WP admin and FTP access here in private reply and I’ll forward this to a developer and see if there are any options/hidden features causing this.

    Thanks!

    Hi Elijah,

I’m 99% sure this is siteground, the first user we seen with it was a nightmare to trackdown but it is part of their server settings:

IMPORTANT! On all SiteGround Cloud and Shared accounts, our Autoupdate system takes precedence over the default WordPress Autoupdate system.

They seem to have a policy that a major version jump means that your plugin/theme is WAY out of date and needs to be updated automatically, this is what i found on other SG sites, minor versino changes 2.0.0.1 -> 2.0.0.2 don’t fire but 1.0.0.0 -> 2.0.0.0 will.

    Please see here:
    https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/wordpress/auto-updates/#How_to_completely_disable_the_WordPress_autoupdates

Let me know if we can help further.

    Stiofan
