Brand new install of Geo 1.x from WP repository. Went to go and add Google Maps API key, but no matter how I do it, I get the following error, when trying to specify a home location.

Geocode was not successful for the following reason: REQUEST_DENIED

Is there an easy fix for this?

    Hi Jason Emanuelson,

Thanks for your post. With the recent changes from Google, you are now required to setup billing for Google Maps API. Have you done that? Also, I’d like you to go through this article that explains more about the Google Map setup https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/add-google-api-key/

I have setup billing and removed all restrictions, yet it still gives me an error.

The Google Maps API management interface is an absolute joke.

I am so ready to abandon Google Maps. Has there been any favorable luck with the alternatives?

That error is because your site is not HTTPS.
Openstreetmap is a good alternative option. You can choose that option at GD > Design > Map.

    Thanks

We have other sites using Google Maps without being https. Is this something that going forward, it is required?

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, this is a requirement and here is the section of the documentation that explains more about this https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/search-filters-overview/#geolocation

What really stinks about this is when you are staging a new site and the url is not the final url. Not every single website on the net needs ssl. It is a waste of resources, time, etc. I guess we are going to move to OpenStreetMap.
