Im doing SEO. Using SEMRush.com and I find that 20% of my pages are 404 (200 pages). upon examination I see that these pages seem to be “pages along the way” of a successful search. Heress a real example: https://gamebeast.com/hockey/new-york/saugerties/ (404)
    https://gamebeast.com/hockey/new-york/saugerties/rinks/ (404)
    https://gamebeast.com/hockey/new-york/saugerties/rinks/saugerties-youth-hockey-association/ (Successful)

SEO wisdom says that 404s can negatively affect my web ranking.
I have found that if I redirect one of the 404 URLs, it breaks the search.

    My QUESTION IS, SHOULD I:
1). disallow 200+ urls in my robots.txt doc? (is there like a “Class” of URL or a folder I can Block, 200 individual URLs seems inelegant)
2). Tell SEMRush to ignore 200 urls in my audit? but dont edit actual URLs
    3). ignore the whole mess?

    Thanks

    Hi,

none of the 3, those shouldn’t be 404, they should return listings pages.

If you provide admin credentials in a private reply we’ll find out what’s going on.

    Let us know,

    Thanks

    Hi Doug,

please install https://wpeasyupdates.com/ and go to the plugins page and add and activate the license key for each add-on. You find the licenses here: https://wpgeodirectory.com/your-account/

Once that done, update the main GeoDirectory plugin and right after update all add-ons.

Last go re-save your WordPress permalinks.

If the problem persist after doing this, let us know and one of our developers will follow up.

    Thanks

Thank You. I tested that in my sandbox there and it worked. We have 98% US listings and 2% Canada. For SEO reasons, I think Id rather not have /United-states/ in my URLs. Is there a way to set this up that circumvents the Country issue?

    Thanks

    Hello Doug,

If directory is multi country then country slug should be in urls to identify regions/cities belongs to which country.

If you want the country slug in listing detail page then you can enable it from GeoDirectory > Permalinks > Add location in urls > Tick country/region/city option. > Save Changes

    Let us know.

    Kiran
