    Hello,

I’d uninstalled the free GeoDirectory before purchasing a membership. Then installed it again. This is for a larger website so I don’t want the GeoDirectory home page as my home page.

1] I believe I’d selected where I wanted the GeoDirectory home page to come up (on a parent page showing in my main menu, which I named Directory). But when I preview that page it doesn’t show the directory home page. Do I need to add a short code? (also, I can’t find where I made that setting)

2] The instructions for setting up are telling me that I should have these pages (below). I see the GD home page and that’s it. How can I get them or restore them?

    Directory pages:

    GD Home page
    GD Search
    GD Detail
    GD Author page

    Directory management pages:

    Add Listing
    Listing Preview
    GD Checkout
    Listing Success
    GD Info
    Manage Invoices

So the effect is, I can’t see what I’m doing as I’m setting up because I don’t know where to preview – if this makes sense? If you could tell me how to fix this that would be great.

    Thanks!

    There are two settings

GD Home page, go to Geodirectory – Permalinks – GD Home and choose the page that will be the home page of the directory.

Then at WordPress – Settings – General – Static Front Page – you can choose the same page or another one for your site home/Front page.

To add widgets to the GD Home page (which is also used for Location pages) go to – WordPress – Widgets – Appearance and add GD widgets to the Home areas. You can also visit Geodirectory – Design – Home to make sure all the widget areas that you want are enabled.

2] The instructions for setting up are telling me that I should have these pages (below). I see the GD home page and that’s it. How can I get them or restore them?

You can simply create new pages one by one and then set them into the GD Permalinks, or you can try the tool at Geodirectory – Tools – Page tool (but this only works if they pages don’t exist).

Once you have your GD Home page widgets assigned, and the GD Home page permalink assigned, you should be able to add a widget, then view the home page and see the widget show up. You can also add dummy content to make sure there is something to see.

    1. Location Switcher – if you are using it in the menu, make sure you have set the menus in GD – Design – Navigation, and then be sure that menu is displaying in your theme at WordPress – Appearance – Menus. If as a widget, make sure the widget area is active

    2. Menu – Let us know if you need help with that.

    3. Location SEO – there are setting in GD – Multilocation – SEO , try that and let us know

    4. Translate countries will change the name of the country in the URL and in breadcrumbs or page titles.

    1. Location switcher

    Two Settings
#1 GD>Multilocations>Show location switcher in menu? (YES)
#2 GD>Design>Navigation>Show geodirectory navigation in selected menu locations: Select the main menu of your site.
Make sure you have selected a menu to be used for your GeoDirectory links at GD > Design > Navigation

    2. Menu:

    Sounds good.

    5. New CPT

If it doesn’t need a lot of custom fields, it is easier for users if there is just one CPT, generally speaking.

    6. Legend

    See: https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/common-styling-examples/#legend
    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/customizing-your-style/

    7. Widgets

Delete them and add them again.

    8. Custom fields

You can drag and drop the fields on the custom fields page to re-order them.

Thanks so much, that’s all been helpful!

About categories, the only kind of categories that make sense for this organization are location-based and I’ve heard that locations (not even regional chapters) should be categories or the locations searching doesn’t work properly. Is that correct?

If so, I’m wondering if it’s possible to NOT use categories at all in the directory.

The names of locations should not be used as categories, that is true.

It is not possible to avoid categories, every listing must have at least one category applied to it.

You don’t want/need different map icons on the map for different listings?

Well, no that’s not useful. They’re all healthcare professionals, chiropractors for instance, and quite spread out globally.

I’d have to get them to organize categories for themselves.

So creating a category: Can you show me where I should be adding my category? (and can it be ‘uncategorized’?)

I went to Appearance > menus > Place categories and see the Add to menu button but clicking it doesn’t open up a field for me to add…

    Thanks!

And if I only use one category, it is possible to show only one search field, Near?

    How to add categories:
    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/places-categories-and-listings/#intro

You can make a category called uncategorized.

It is possible to hide the search for field with CSS:

    .gd-search-input-wrapper.gd-search-field-search {
        display: none;
    }

Add custom CSS to GD – Design – Scripts – Custom CSS
