I have businesses that have physical addresses and ones that do not, and will travel to you. (Like princess parties and such.) Some that will travel to many different cities, are available all over my area.

So I know I can make custom posts, but I don’t actually want to make the “virtual” or traveling businesses a separate type…because I still want ALL these business together in their appropriate categories.

For example…I have a category for birthday parties and a sub category for children’s entertainment. If I had a whole separate post type for physical and virtual businesses, then I don’t think I could group together ALL the children’s entertainment businesses…I want them all together in the same category, not segregated by whether or not they have a physical location. I don’t believe people will care about segregating out the physical vs the virtual. There’s no need to have them separate. But as it is, the address field is required, so I’ve had to have a note like “no physical business location” in the address field…which feels messy to me. AND it gets particularly messy in the city field when you are talking about, again, for example, a princess party business that will travel to any city in our county and even adjoining counties.

What would work best for me would simply be to make the address field OPTIONAL. So it ONLY needs to be filled out if they have an actual physical location the business wants shared with the public. And if they don’t, then they leave it blank, and it doesn’t show on the front end.

Is this possible? I see no box to uncheck to make it not required.

Here’s why making virtual businesses a separate CPT doesn’t work for me…see attached image.

For my front page, when I set up the blocks to show a category. It only allows me to choose ONE CPT and ONE category. If it allowed me to choose multiple CPTS and then one category, that would work fine…but I don’t see any way to choose multiple CPTS. The dropdown only lets me pick one. Currently that means I can only pick a place or an event. If I made the virtual businesses a new CPT, then it would mean that I could pick either a virtual place, a physical place or an event to show in a block. Then choose the category.

But that’s not what I want. I don’t want the virtual and physical businesses segragated.

I want ALL businesses, virtual AND physical all showing in these blocks by CATEGORY. Does this make sense? I hope I’m explaining it well.

The simple solution here would be to enable us to choose multiple CPTS to display in a block. But I have no idea if that’s even feasible.

For that situation we recommend a two-prong solution

Use the Franchise manager to allow your visitors to add listings in each market they serve

Translate the plugin so that the TEXT of the street address field makes it clear that, once they set the address on the map, they can change the street to any value, even the name of the city.

To help your users be discovered, also make sure to use the GD Locations widget to show links to each location so their listing will be shown.

Location pages are special and can display multiple CPTs, if that is the way you want to go. But, in your case, it seems like dividing them by category on the location page would work better?

Hmmm, you’ve given me a lot to investigate and think about, thanks! I’ll see if I can make this work.

Going to have to read up on all this first… I never even looked at the Franchise plugin since I never thought I’d need it so no idea how that works yet…

Lots to explore now, thanks a bunch! I’m sure I’ll be back with more questions once I get a chance to learn more about all this.

    As always, you guys rock!

Ok I am going around and around over here. I have been digging into how to do this for DAYS. Hours and hours and hours trying to figure this out and I am so lost.

I am not understanding the documentation on so much of these addons, nor am I understanding what you mean by your 2-prong solution. I THOUGHT I did, but nothing is working. And I keep hitting walls.

Can you walk me through your approach step by step, please? It would be easier and faster, I suspect than me going through everything I’ve tried and what I’m confused about…which would take pages to explain.

I’m not sure what you had in mind for what I need. I’m still trying to figure out how the Franchise manager works…I don’t see any demos of this plugin and haven’t been successful doing a sample on my site. I don’t know how to add the franchise on the front end. I don’t see any way to do it.

When you view a listing detail page for a CPT and listing with franchise enabled, then the add franchise link is part of the GD Author Actions output, you know, the edit and delete links.

Do you have that all setup yet?

I do now. I swear I read that page before multiple times and didn’t see that image there before…was that recently added? It seems more fleshed out now. It was really vague before.

Plus, when I tried adding the author actions widget before, when I was fiddling with all the widgets, it did nothing. Now it does.

Ok so now I have done a test franchise but I don’t see how they show any indication in the front end that they are tied together? They just show as separate listings, as far as I can tell?

You could change the title of the tab, perhaps.

“These listings are tied together” ?
