If you have a non-recurring package, an email can be sent before expiry, that renewal is required.
GD > Prices and Payments > Notifications tab > PRE EXPIRY NOTIFICATIONS TO CLIENTSInvoices are only created if a customer chooses to buy a listing.
If they choose not to renew, no invoice will be created.The start date is added to the invoice as “Invoice Date”, and you can add an explanation that the service will last for x number of days. That should explain start and end period then.
There is no cancelation button, a listing automatically gets canceled if no payment is received, depending on the expiry settings of the package.
I’ll get a developer to have a look at your question too, in case they want to add anything.

Any reason why that would not work?
