What kind of server are we talking about? Because if it is very slow and getting stuck, most likely it is not fast enough and it is timing out.

Try increasing the PHP execution timeout.

Another option is to try to break the files into smaller lists (5000 for example).

The only faster way to do this, would be to get a faster server. (for 290k listings, you should get at least a decent dedicated server)
