Don’t copy them in functions.php and don’t edit the css directly and you’ll never have to worry about updates.

Use the code snippets plugin instead of adding code to functions.php and add your custom css to geodirectory > design > scripts > custom css.

If the code provided by Giri isn’t working for you, it means that you are doing something wrong and without seeing directly what you are doing wrong, we cannot correct you.
