Set the GD home page to full width: GD > Design > Home: content section 100% and turn off sidebars.
Then change the widgets at Appearance > Widgets > GD Home Content section.
There is a text widget, then 2 Popular Post widgets, and then a GD Events Calendar widget.See also

You can create 2 different packages, both featured. Then use CSS to target them differently.
