As of April 2016, Google has disabled the PageRank API (toolbarqueries.google.com) and it is no longer providing data about PageRank of visited websites.

Requests to the API for any website now return PR0.

There are still useful website providing an online page rank checker like www.PRchecker.info that will provide the last PageRank recorded before April 2016. Unfortunately for all new domains, the result will be PR0.

We don’t know if PageRank is no longer part of Google algorithm, most probably not, but the data about it is simply no longer provided.

How could I check now if a website is passing me a good or bad link that could penalize my SEO ranking? Well most SEO for a the past few years have been looking more at Domain Authority and Page Authority to evaluate the potential of a link.

Domain and Page Authority are scores (on a 100-point scale) that Moz.com put in place and aims to determine how good a domain or a specific page will rank on search engines. Data from the Mozscape web index like link counts, MozRank, MozTrust, and dozens of other factors determin both DA and PA.

There are free online tools to get DA and PA scores, most if not all of them powered by Moz API. Today we want to make sure to get backlinks from websites with a domain authority that is similar or higher than our website domain authority.

Let’s make an example, that will also teach you how to get few good backlinks.

The case

We are interested in getting listed in few webmasters directories to spread the news about GeoDirectory beyond WordPress blogs and forums.

We use dropmylink.com to find websites using the Keyword: “Webmaster Directory” in category : “Resource Pages”. We found an interesting one that allows for listing submission, but we are not 100% sure that its Domain Authority is high enough to also boost our rankings.

What we do is simple, we visit a domain authority checker, we enter the URL of the webmaster’s directory and we check their DA and PA.

In our case 321webmaster.com has a DA of 46 a PA of 55, the website has over 12.000 backlinks and it is 17 years old. Considering that wpgeodirectory.com DA is lower (38) and the directory niche is highly related to our business, this is an excellent directory to get a link from and we are defintely going to submit our website there!

Knowing about how to get quality backlinks from websites with high Domain Authority is probably the mst important skill to create highly visible directory websites that earn money online.

  1. Just as an update this and to confirm some of the bits above

The front end Pagerank of 0 – 10 that google gave us was a good indicator of how you were doing but was also very often confused with the actual Pagerank algorithm named after Larry Page one of the founders of Google which is very mnuch alive and well and is one of the top 2 factors according to a Google hangout not too long ago regarding Google Rankbrain which he confirmed is the third most improtant factor below Content and Pagerank

Pagerank and Pagerank flow is very important still and backlinks that provide Pagerank are still one of the top 2 factors. so keep building those backlinks!!

http://people.revoledu.com/kardi/tutorial/PageRank/Page-Rank-Computation.html is a good resource if you have a small website and http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~chazelle/courses/BIB/pagerank.htm explains the actual algorithm which defines how Pagerank (linkjuice) is passed from one page to another.

PS if you try to do this with a large site you will probably fail as excel cannot manage hundreds of millions of internal links. I know this from experience. There are php scripts which can attempt larger calculations but its difficult to export these in any meaningful. I use ahrefs UR as the best initial indicator now PR is gone.

If you want more info drop me a message and i will try to help
