GeoDirectory’s French translation, like all its languages, comes from translate.wordpress.org. Set your site language to French at Settings > General > Site Language and WordPress downloads the GeoDirectory language pack for you. Later updates to it show under Dashboard > Updates.
You can see how much of GeoDirectory is translated into French, and suggest translations for missing strings, on the GeoDirectory translation project. Suggestions only reach sites after a French translation editor approves them, and WordPress only builds a language pack once enough of the plugin is translated.
Translate missing strings yourself
To fill the gaps on your own site now, make your own translation file with the Loco Translate plugin or Poedit:
- Use the geodirectory-en_US.po file from the plugin’s languages folder as your template, or let Loco Translate read the strings from the plugin.
- Save the translation as geodirectory-fr_FR.po and compile it to geodirectory-fr_FR.mo.
- Upload both to wp-content/languages/geodirectory/ (create the folder if it doesn’t exist).
GeoDirectory loads files from that folder before the language pack, so your translations take priority, and plugin updates don’t touch them.
To change only a few words, see How to change just one language string.
Add-ons
Each add-on has its own translation file and text domain, for example geodirlocation for Location Manager. You can translate them the same way with Loco Translate. Our old add-on translation site is closing; wpgeodirectory.com/translate/ has the latest on where add-on translations are going.
