The Near field in the GeoDirectory search bar searches in two different ways. Which one runs depends on whether the visitor picks one of the location suggestions or just types a place and searches.
Picking a location from the suggestions
With Location Manager active, typing in the Near field shows matching cities, regions and countries from your directory. When the visitor picks one, results are limited to listings in that location, matched on the city, region or country saved in each listing’s address. A listing a few miles away but saved under a neighbouring city won’t appear.
Typing a place and searching
If the visitor types a place and searches without picking a suggestion, GeoDirectory looks up that place’s coordinates and shows listings within the search radius around it. You set the radius at GeoDirectory > Settings > General > Search > Search near radius, in miles or km depending on the Search distances setting. The default is 7.
The radius is measured in a straight line, not by road, so a large radius can reach across a border, lake or state line into another city.
If picking a suggestion still shows every listing
- Update GeoDirectory and Location Manager to the latest versions.
- If your theme or a custom template changes the search form, test with the standard GD > Search block. The location filter relies on a hidden field in the form, and custom forms sometimes drop it.
- Clear any page cache that might be serving an old search page.
Using only radius search
If you would rather every search used the radius, turn off the Enable location search autocompleter option in the Location Manager search settings. Visitors then type a place and get results around it.
For the keyword side of search, see How does the GeoDirectory Search work, and for every search option Settings Overview for General > Search.
