You do not need coordinates in your CSV file. When GeoDirectory imports a listing whose latitude and longitude are empty, it looks them up from the address using the map service set on your site. Rows that already have coordinates are imported as they are.
- Keep the
latitudeandlongitudecolumns in your CSV but leave the cells empty. The lookup only runs when the columns are there and empty. - Fill in the address columns:
street, city, region, countryandzip. The more complete the address, the better the match. - Check that your site can geocode. With Google Maps, the API key needs the Geocoding API enabled. If your Maps key is restricted by HTTP referrer, add a second key in the Google Geocoding API Key field under GeoDirectory > Settings > General (click Show Advanced). With OpenStreetMap, the lookup uses the OpenStreetMap geocoding service and needs no key.
- Import the file in GeoDirectory > Import/Export > Listings.
Each row without coordinates means one request to the geocoding service, so a large file takes longer to import, and with Google each lookup counts towards your API usage. For very large imports you may prefer to geocode the file before importing.
Import errors about the address
- “Failed to retrieve GPS data from a address using API.” means the address could not be found, or the API key was refused. Check the address in that row and your key’s settings.
- “Address city, region or country missing” means the row has coordinates but no city, region or country. Fill those columns in.
