We use Poedit for GeoDirectory translations. To find strings that are in one .po file and missing from another, or to bring an old translation up to date after a plugin update, you have two good options.
Update a translation in Poedit
GeoDirectory ships an English file, languages/geodirectory-en_US.po, which lists every string in the current version. Use it as the reference:
- Open your translation, for example
geodirectory-de_DE.po, in Poedit. - Choose Translation > Update from POT File and select
geodirectory-en_US.pofrom the plugin’s languages folder. Poedit accepts .po files here as well as .pot files. - Poedit adds new strings as untranslated and marks strings that are no longer used as obsolete. Translate the new ones and save.
Compare two files with gettext
The GNU gettext command line tools can compare files directly. msgcmp reports every string in the reference file that has no translation in yours:
msgcmp geodirectory-de_DE.po geodirectory-en_US.po
msgmerge writes an updated copy of your translation with the new strings added and your existing translations kept:
msgmerge geodirectory-de_DE.po geodirectory-en_US.po -o geodirectory-de_DE-updated.po
Save the result in Poedit to compile the .mo file, then upload it as described in how to translate or localize GeoDirectory. If you would like to share your translation, see how to contribute translations.
