Answers to common GeoDirectory questions about users and accounts. Click a question to open the answer.
GeoDirectory doesn’t have its own registration form. It uses the normal WordPress registration or a user plugin, so email confirmation (double opt-in) is set up in that plugin.
With our free UsersWP plugin:
- Go to UsersWP > User Types and edit the user type your registration form uses.
- Set Registration Action to Require Email Activation.
- Save.
New users then get an email with an activation link, and they can’t log in until they click it. If users can’t register at all, see why can my users not register?.
Yes. A user’s listings page is built on the WordPress author archive, so its URL looks like /author/username/places/ and their favorites are at /author/username/favs/. GeoDirectory uses whatever author base WordPress has, so if you change the author base, the GeoDirectory URLs change with it.
Add this snippet (with the Code Snippets plugin or your child theme), then go to Settings > Permalinks and click Save to rebuild the rules:
add_action( 'init', function() {
global $wp_rewrite;
$wp_rewrite->author_base = 'member';
} );
There is only one author archive in WordPress. If another plugin redirects author pages to its own profile pages, it will also take over the GeoDirectory listings pages. If you use UsersWP, its GeoDirectory add-on shows a member’s listings on their UsersWP profile instead.
There is no Gravity Forms integration in GeoDirectory, so passing a Gravity Forms entry into a listing needs custom development.
You can usually do this with GeoDirectory’s own add listing form. Turn on “Allow posting without logging in?” in GeoDirectory > Settings > General (click Show Advanced), and make sure user registration is enabled in Settings > General. A visitor can then fill in the add listing form with their name and email, and GeoDirectory creates their account and their listing together, including the address and map location.
Add any extra fields you need from providers in Places > Settings > Custom Fields.
reCAPTCHA on UsersWP forms comes from the free UsersWP ReCaptcha add-on, so first check that it is active and enabled for the register form. Then check these:
- The site and secret keys match the reCAPTCHA version you picked in the add-on settings, and your domain is listed for those keys in Google’s reCAPTCHA admin.
- Caching or script optimisation plugins are not delaying or combining the Google reCAPTCHA script.
- If the register form opens in a popup, the reCAPTCHA script must load on the page that holds the popup. Test the form on the normal register page too, so you know which case you have.
The ReCaptcha setup guide covers the settings.
Some reCAPTCHA plugins check every login and registration request but only add the captcha box to the default WordPress forms. A form they did not add the box to then fails with “reCAPTCHA verification failed”.
Use a captcha that knows about the forms you use instead:
- GD reCAPTCHA adds the captcha to GeoDirectory forms. See the GD reCAPTCHA setup guide.
- If your login and register pages come from UsersWP, its ReCaptcha add-on covers them. See the UsersWP ReCaptcha setup guide.
Turn the other reCAPTCHA plugin off, or limit it to forms it supports, so the two do not check the same request.
That bar is the WordPress toolbar, and BuddyPress can show it to visitors who are not logged in so they can log in or register. GeoDirectory does not add it.
Go to Settings > BuddyPress > Options and untick Show the Toolbar for logged out users, then save. The bar disappears for logged out visitors.
To hide the toolbar for logged in members who are not admins as well, see How do I remove the WP Admin bar for non-admin users?.
