GeoDirectory organises locations as country, region and city, with optional neighbourhoods inside a city. A state or province is a region. Your listings get these from their address, so you don’t need location categories, and we don’t recommend them: each listing would need a category for its location on top of its real address.
Browsing many locations needs the Location Manager add-on. Each location then has its own URL on the location page, and you can build a drill-down where visitors pick a state, then a city, then see the listings there.
Set up the drill-down
- Install Location Manager and add your listings with full addresses. See Location Manager setup guide and How to add a new location.
- On your home page, add the GD > Locations block with Show Locations set to Regions. It lists your states, each linking to its location page.
- Edit the location page (the page set as Location page in GeoDirectory > Settings > General > Pages) and add GD > Locations with Show Locations set to Cities. With the location filter on, it lists the cities in the region being viewed.
- Keep GD > Listings on the location page with “Enable location filter?” ticked, so a city page lists the listings in that city.
For visitors who already know where they want to go, the GD > Location Switcher lets them type a city and jump straight to it.
Counties
There is no county level. Neighbourhoods are the only extra level, and they sit below cities. If visitors need to search by county, add a select custom field called County and offer it as a search filter with the Advanced Search add-on.
Directory and classifieds on one site
Running two directory plugins side by side usually causes conflicts. To have both a directory and classified ads, use GeoDirectory with a separate post type for ads (the Custom Post Types add-on), and link each ad to the business that posted it. See How to link two Custom Post Types.
